Alien Typography

  • Task: Create a typeface for an Alien Race
  • Client: Phillip Motley, Comm 565
  • Tools used: Illustrator CS5, Fontographer 5

We were asked to create a typeface specific to an alien race. We were encouraged to think outside of the box, and to include elements that would not be familiar to human beings. As a fan of Kurt Vonnegut, I decided that I would design a font for the Tralfamadorian race from his novel Slaughterhouse 5.

Because he describes them as having plunger-like base with a hand on top and being very flexible, the typographic elements I used for large sweeping motions with anchor points. I created 20 unique letters and 10 digits for this project, all meant to symbolize the people of Tralfamador.

Originally created in Illustrator, I eventually turned it into an actual typeface called “Tralfamadorian” which is available for download, though not really practical.
