I’ve been working on chriskirkham.com now for a week or so. I decided it was time to take it seriously. I’m going to start populating the blog with actually useful content about things that actually matter, but until that happens, I’m going to just explain a little bit of what’s going on. So here’s the breakdown:
1. Preparing for the mobile web
I’ve switched themes, and tweaked this theme to a point where I feel good about how it looks on my iPhone. The reason I’ve done this is because smartphones are getting cheaper. Android and iOS are everywhere. People are getting online on their phones more than ever before. So if I intend on being any kind of expert, I’d like to think that would require me catering to multiple options. Tangents now looks great on the mobile web, and it loads fast. And you don’t have to deal with my pesky ads.
2. I’ve put up some ads
I don’t know if I did this to feel more legit, or if I honestly expect to make money off of these, but I decided to add these to the blog. The big one is a google adsense, so there’s no telling what it’ll be filled with. However the bottom two are for causes I believe in. I really do support DreamHost, and have found them to be the absolute best hosting service for people like me. You can host a hefty site on there and the usability is tremendous. The FTP is simple, the domain registration is simple and the company is honest. I think that I’ll work out a deal with them and put together a code to give people a discount. The third ad is just a link to Google’s company philosophy. #6 is the most important: You can make money without doing evil. It’s something I believe. Finally, in the footer, there’s another link to DreamHost and a link to MyBlogGuest.com, a directory for guest bloggers. I have long been passionate about writing, and I really want to make an effort to become an established writer, even if it’s in the blogosphere. I want to help the people at MyBlogGuest, because a lot of the people who write for them are the same people I’m trying to fight here at *Tangents— SEO link farmers and spammers. More frequent posts
I am going to do the best I can to update this blog every other day. Most of what I write about will be relevant to people who are interested in becoming more honest online and developing great content for their websites, which I believe is the only real way to do SEO.
This is just the first of many new posts. I fully intend on making this a more focused endeavor and hopefully becoming a positive influence of change online.
*Tangent: Google Webmaster is telling me that people are getting to my site by searching “funny babysitting stories”. WTF?
